HRTPO staff regularly highlights a project that is currently being implemented within the Hampton Roads region. The City of Williamsburg is making improvements to Ironbound Road in three phases.
The first phase was completed in 2019 and consisted of intersection improvements at Ironbound Road and Longhill Road.
Phase 2 of the Ironbound Road Improvements project will construct an additional eastbound lane on Ironbound Road from Longhill Road to Richmond Road and from Middle Street to Treyburn Drive, along with the installation of a sidewalk and multi-use path. The project also includes the coordination of multiple traffic signals. The total cost estimate for Phase 2 is approximately $1,922,700 and currently in the preliminary engineering phase. Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2025 and take one year to complete.
Phase 3 of the Ironbound Road Improvements project will widen Ironbound Road from Treyburn Drive to DePue Drive and create a sidewalk on the south side and a multi-use path on the north side of the road. Pedestrian/bicycle and streetlight improvements will also be part of the project. The total cost estimate for Phase 3 is approximately $3,312,400 and construction is currently underway and scheduled for completion in June 2024. Phase 3 is on track to be open to the public before Phase 2.
