The Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO), the metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for the Hampton Roads metropolitan planning area, has completed the DRAFT Hampton Roads Regional Safety Study Report.
There were a total of 24,712 crashes in Hampton Roads in 2022. These crashes resulted in tens of millions of dollars of damage, over 15,000 injuries, and 162 lives lost. Because of the impacts of crashes on the residents and visitors of Hampton Roads, roadway safety is a priority in the HRTPO regional transportation planning process.
This report is an update to the previous Hampton Roads Regional Safety Studies released by the HRTPO in 2004 and 2014. This report includes sections related to regional safety trends, crash characteristics, crash locations, efforts to improve roadway safety, general crash countermeasures, an in-depth analysis of high crash locations, and next steps. As part of the study, a public survey was conducted regarding regional roadway safety that included nearly 1,500 responses.
