[ARCHIVED] PUBLIC NOTICE: Roadway Functional Classification Update

TPOthumb

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in cooperation with Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) throughout Virginia including the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO), is conducting a major statewide update to the Federal Roadway Functional Classification maps.  This functional classification update, which historically occurs following the decennial Census, will replace the 2010 Roadway Functional Classification for Virginia.

Functional classification is the process by which roadways are grouped into various classes – such as freeways and expressways, principal and minor arterials, and major and minor collectors – based on the character of the service they provide.  VDOT assigns a functional classification to all public roadways based on criteria and guidance provided by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).  More information on how roadways are classified is available at https://www.vdot.virginia.gov/projects/roads-classified.

Click here to view the draft list of recommended changes to the Hampton Roads roadway functional classification system, based on a review of the current system by HRTPO and locality staff.

All interested parties are encouraged to review the draft functional classification update and send comments to Mr. Keith Nichols at knichols@hrtpo.org or by mail to 723 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, Virginia 23320. The deadline for comments is September 23, 2024.
