By Matthew Harrington, Transportation Planner

HRTPO Staff regularly highlights a project that is currently being implemented within the Hampton Roads region. The City of Chesapeake has recently finished such a project with its Mount Pleasant Road Widening Phase 2 project.

Phase 2 of the overall Mount Pleasant Road Widening will widen the roadway from Cooper’s Ditch Bridge to Centerville Turnpike. The project will construct a center lane, 12-foot-wide lanes, curb and gutter, sidewalks and drainage improvements.

The total project budget for the Mount Pleasant Road Widening Phase 2 was $10.35 million.

Phase 3 of the project will improve the drainage crossing at the railroad tracks and provide a signalized pedestrian crossing and connection at the tracks. Phase 3 is at 100% design completion and is coordinating with the railroad and utility companies. The City’s goal is to move phase 3 to construction in the summer of 2025 to avoid disruptions with the school.

The entire corridor will be resurfaced during the spring of 2025 utilizing State of Good Repair Funds.
