Regional Flood Insurance Campaign
The 17 localities of the HRPDC are participating in a regional outreach campaign to encourage area residents to purchase flood insurance. FEMA is updating the National Flood Insurance Program’s methodology for calculating flood insurance premiums. The new methodology, called Risk Rating 2.0, is designed to better reflect a property’s flood risk and to be more actuarily sound and equitable. This new methodology became effective on October 1, 2021 for all new polices, and will be required for existing polices starting April 1, 2022. Approaches to Communicating Flooding Information in Hampton Roads (2018)
HRPDC staff, in collaboration with Old Dominion University, conducted surveys of local government emergency managers and planners regarding efforts to communicate flooding information. The report summarizes the survey results and highlights opportunities and resources to assist local government staff in addressing the challenges of outreach and delivering flooding notifications.
