Offshore wind energy is a rapidly growing global industry that creates electricity from large wind turbines installed in coastal waters. The industry is poised for significant growth in the U.S., bringing with it considerable economic and environmental benefits. These benefits include the creation of thousands of jobs, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants, and increased energy resilience and security.
Virginia has the potential to become a national leader in the offshore wind industry. Our region’s port infrastructure, maritime workforce, and business environment are unmatched on the East Coast in their ability to support the manufacturing, installation, and servicing of offshore wind turbines. The HRPDC is working with regional and state partners to position Hampton Roads as a hub for East Coast offshore wind development.
