Wastewater
Local governments own and maintain wastewater collection systems. The collection systems convey flow to the HRSD regional collection system and treatment plants. Regional wastewater initiatives for Hampton Roads municipal utilities and the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) are coordinated through the HRPDC Directors of Utilities Committee. Hampton Roads is served by separate sanitary sewer systems which means runoff from rainfall does not flow to the wastewater collection system. Localities have separate stormwater collection systems that convey flow to streams, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.
The HRSD, in cooperation with the Hampton Roads localities, has developed an integrated plan to reduce sanitary sewer system overflows, to address regulatory and environmental obligations, and to protect the region's water resources. More information is available at the links below:
