December 5, 2019 01:00 PM until 02:30 PM Eastern Time Zone
The Water Quality Technical Workgroup meeting will be held on Thursday December 5, 2019 in the HRPDC Boardroom (723 Woodlake Dr. Chesapeake VA, 23320) from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. This meeting will follow the regular monthly Regional Environmental Committee (REC) meeting held in the morning (10 am – 12 pm). We have two topics for discussion lined up.
- Dr. Daniel McLaughlin (Assistant Professor, Virginia Tech) will discuss flood risk reduction values provisioned by forest cover in the City of Virginia Beach based on findings from a recent study done in partnership with the City of Virginia Beach, The Nature Conservancy and Lynnhaven River Now. The project analyzed soil water storage, surface water storage and water use (evapotranspiration) by forest cover and all other land cover classes across the City. Findings highlight the role of forest cover in providing critical water storage and water removal functions, thereby decreasing runoff to adjacent areas. Dr. McLaughlin will share analytic approaches and a data visualization tool developed for the project and discuss possible applications and future study directions.
- Ms. Grace Saunders (Assistant Director, Restoration, Elizabeth River Project) will be discussing ditch retrofits conducted in Norfolk. Ditch retrofits are available for TMDL crediting and also help with flooding concerns. Ms. Saunders will discuss the benefits of ditch retrofits, how these practices are designed, and lessons learned from implementation. Funding for the ditch retrofits was made available by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
There will be time for questions and answers during and after each presentation.
