Seasonally adjusted unemployment figures increased slightly in June, rising from 5.9% in May to 6.0% in June. According to the Local Area Unemployment Statistics, the number of employed people in the region increased slightly, however, a much larger increase in the size of the labor force resulted in an increase in the overall unemployment rate. The Hampton Roads experience was not atypical, as both the Nation and the Commonwealth also experienced slight increases in their respective unemployment rates. The Hampton Roads unemployment experience remains slightly higher that the state rate, and consistently below the national rate.
