February 2023 Map of the Month: Metro Area Migration Flows To and From Hampton Roads

When residents move out of Hampton Roads, where do they go? Where did new residents of Hampton Roads move from? This information is compiled by the US Census Bureau as “migration flow” data. The migration flows are estimated between metro areas and between individual counties. The estimates are captured for a five-year rolling period and updated with each release of the American Community Survey (ACS) data.

This month’s map shows the top ten regions for in flow migration and out flow migration for Hampton Roads. With the strong military presence in the region, it is no surprise that metro areas such as Jacksonville, Florida and San Diego, California appear on the lists. The data also reveals the very close ties between Hampton Roads and Richmond and Washington, DC.

There are two different maps to view – one for the in flow migration and one for the out flow migration. The tabs at the top of the map will toggle between them.
