Have you ever heard of Warrosquyoake County? Did you know there used to be a City of Warwick, City of Nansemond, and City of South Norfolk?
There are currently 17 member localities of the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission but in 1634, the colony of 
Virginia consisted of just eight original “shires,” five of which were in what is now considered Hampton Roads. Over time, these transformed into the counties and independent cities we know today.
This month we are presenting a “Story Map” which describes how the local government boundaries in Hampton Roads have changed since the English founded the Virginia colony in 1606 until the last boundary change in 2007. This unique presentation provides readers with a general overview of the historical events or conditions that influenced these boundary changes. The historic boundaries are visualized with a series of interactive maps depicting their status over a variety of time periods.
