HRPDC and HRTPO Staffs Produce Regional Journey to Work Maps

Hampton Roads is a region that is connected through a shared culture, history, geography, and sense of place. Residents and visitors alike routinely traverse across the region to enjoy all that Hampton Roads has to offer. Much of our shared experience is rooted in our inter-dependence, as our communities have long worked together and have grown together. Information recently released from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS) helps illustrate the degree to which our localities are inter-connected. According to the most recent ACS data, nearly half (47%) of Hampton Roads commuters have a place of employment that is outside of their jurisdiction of residence. In fact, out of the 381 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in the United States, Hampton Roads has the 13th highest share of commuters that leave their home community to travel to work.

They illustrate the level of interconnectedness between the localities that constitute Hampton Roads.
