HRDB Symposium Spotlights Employment Component of the Americans with Disabilities Act

HRDB SymposiumThe Americans with Disabilities Act:  For Everyone, Everyday! – Title 1 Employment symposium was held Thursday, May 29, 2014, in the Regional Board Room at the HRPDC offices. The event was sponsored by the Hampton Roads Disabilities Board (HRDB) which receives administrative support from the HRPDC.

Following opening remarks from Shirley Confino-Rehder, HRDB Chair, Marilyn Booker from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) provided the over 60 participants a comprehensive overview of Title 1 of the Americans with Disabilities Act from the perspective of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. After a quick question and answer period, there was a panel discussion regarding the recruitment and placement of disabled individuals in the workforce, as well as best practices from local employment related service providers and agencies.

The morning symposium also provided attendees the opportunity to share successes and challenges with peers and cultivate more networking and communication between practitioners.  Because of the high level of engagement and interest, a follow-up roundtable discussion was scheduled to continue the dialogue to pinpoint regional barriers and strengths.  To register for this meeting to be held at the Regional Board Room on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, click HERE
