March 2023 Map of the Month: Predominant Type of Housing Structures in Hampton Roads

This month’s map looks at regional housing data regarding the distribution of different types of housing structures in Hampton Roads by census tract. The categories displayed on the map are derived from the American Community Survey (ACS) and include:

  • Single-Family Detached
  • Low-Density Multifamily Attached (9 units or less)
  • Medium-Density Multifamily Attached (10 – 49 units)
  • High-Density Multifamily Attached (more than 50 units)
  • Mobile Homes
  • Other (RVs, Boats, etc.)

Multifamily Attached structures can include apartments, townhomes, condos, and duplexes of various configurations.

While each type of housing structure can exist within a single census tract, there is one type that will be the most predominant, i.e., the type with highest number in that tract. The map is symbolized by this category. Click on a census tract to see the breakdown of the categories in that tract. Some tracts do not have any residents (airport, commercial areas, etc.) so they will be shown in gray. Single-Family Detached homes are most prevalent housing structures overall in Hampton Roads.
