Housing Virginia, HRPDC Present Report on Housing the Regions Future Workforce

Housing Future Workforce Picture CollageOn Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at the Chesapeake Conference Center, Housing Virginia, the Hampton Roads Housing Consortium, the HRPDC, along with various other funders and supporters released the National Housing Conference Center for Housing Policy’s examination of Hampton Roads’ employment driven housing projections for the next two decades.

Dr. Lisa Sturtevant, Executive Director, National Housing Conference’s Center for Housing Policy, presented the report which included the type, pricing and location of housing needs throughout Hampton Roads based on projected job growth through the year 2033.

The report projects the region could expect to see 124,356 net new jobs as a result of job growth by the year 2033. As a result, housing demand associated with these new jobs would equate to just over 86,000 units.

Following Dr. Sturtevant’s presentation a panel of local industry experts responded to the study. The panel included:

  • Steve Lawson, Lawson Companies

  • Dr. Vinod Agarwal, Old Dominion University

  • Michael Carpenter, Virginia Peninsula Association of REALTORS, and

  • William Harrell, Hampton Roads Transit
