The 2023 Great American Cleanup, hosted by askHRgreen.org and Keep Virginia Beautiful, was held on March 24 and 25 in Hampton Roads. It was the 25th anniversary for this national initiative which began with Keep America Beautiful. Dozens of individual clean up events were powered by over 2,400 volunteers. The volunteers put in over 3,000 hours and collected 2,800 bags of trash amounting to over 47 tons! The events were spread across Hampton Roads and cleaned up parks, waterways, neighborhoods, and roadsides.
The map of the month visualizes the impact of this event. It shows the locations of the individual clean up locations and indicates how many volunteers participated at each site. The localities are symbolized by the total pounds of litter that were collected.
