November Map of the Month – Military Personnel and Payroll in Hampton Roads

The November Map of the Month presents information about military personnel in Hampton Roads. According to the Department of Defense’s Defense Manpower Data Center, there are nearly 110,000 people associated with the military in the region with approximately 55,000 on active duty. Also included in the count are National Guard, Reserve, and civilian employees. The counts are based on the duty station of active duty/civilian employees and the assigned locations for National Guard and Reserve. The gross payroll is cumulative for FY 2020 and personnel counts are from September 2020. The City of Norfolk tops the region for the total number of military personnel and the total payroll, followed by Virginia Beach, then Portsmouth.

The interactive map displays charts and graphs breaking down the number of military personnel and the gross payroll for each locality. Click on the map to see information.
