HRDB Symposium Examines Transportation and the ADA

The Hampton Roads Disabilities Board (HRDB) recently held another symposium examining The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The September 30th meeting looked at ADA Transportation Title 11-Section B. That particular part of the ADA looks at how those with disabilities access public transportation, their rights and what transportation providers must do to be compliant with the law.

The morning began with a presentation from Kristi McLaughlin, Training and Technical Assistance Specialist for Easter Seals Project ACTION, who reviewed common assumptions, misconceptions and questions regarding what is and what is not covered in the ADA with regard to transportation. Her presentation was followed by an informative question and answer sessions where the nearly 60 symposium attendees were engaged in lively discussion.

The symposium wrapped with a panel discussion that was designed to focus on ADA transportation in the Hampton Roads region. Participating panelists included: Keith Johnson from Hampton Roads Transit (HRT), Frank Azzalina from HRTI Cabs, and Steven Fields from Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia (SSSEVA).
