The U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan announced that thousands of non-elderly Americans with disabilities will receive housing assistance to enable them to access affordable housing. Virginia housing authorities will receive 463 housing choice vouchers for non-elderly individuals with disabilities and their families to access affordable housing.
Successful redevelopment and housing authorities applicants were; Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, and Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority.
Award Totals:
• Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority $371k for 50 vouchers;
• Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority $1 for 150 vouchers;
• Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority $819꽧 for 93 vouchers;
Of the allocation of overall State allocation, the Hampton Roads Region received over 60% of the vouchers. On the national level, Virginia received the third largest State-share of the total behind California and Ohio.
HUD will announce a second award of vouchers for non-elderly individuals with disabilities living in nursing housing and other health care institutions, and Virginia may receive additional vouchers at that time.
