Spending time outdoors is one of the safest, socially-distant activities one can do these days. With this in mind, askHRgreen.org and Keep Virginia Beautiful invite Hampton Roads neighbors to step outside, Sept. 18-19, and join the Great American Cleanup by hosting a #TeamUp2CleanUp event on the street where they live.
Traditionally held in the spring, Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup events were first postponed and then re-imagined to accommodate both the safety and distance of participants. Instead of gathering in large groups for organized community cleanups, residents and businesses will focus on cleaning up their own neighborhood blocks and local outdoor spaces in smaller numbers.
“Due to social distancing guidelines, we are encouraging volunteers to lead neighborhood cleanups with smaller groups in a spot of their choosing,” said Keep Virginia Beautiful Executive Director Mike Baum. “Maybe it’s a neighborhood entrance that could use a little sprucing up, or a community park that needs weeding. The choice is community-driven.”
#TeamUp2CleanUp coordinators will have access to cleanup supplies for their volunteers if needed, including gloves, trash bags and trash grabbers. They will also advise about proper safety protocols and report their cleanup results. Learn more about how to join the effort at askhrgreen.org/cleanup.
